Accessibility Statement

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA as a working target. We are not claiming formal certification or a completed third-party audit; we are stating the standard we build and review against.

Measures currently in place across the site include:

• semantic HTML structure with a single main heading per page and ordered headings;
• a skip link to the main content and clearly marked page landmarks;
• full keyboard operation of navigation, filters, accordions and forms;
• visible focus indicators on interactive elements;
• generous touch and click target sizes on navigation and controls;
• text alternatives for meaningful images;
• form fields with associated labels, inline error messages, and status changes announced to assistive technology;
• colour contrast checked against the standard, with status never conveyed by colour alone;
• respect for the operating system's reduced-motion preference;
• a responsive layout that reflows without horizontal scrolling down to small screens.

We would rather be accurate than absolute. Current limitations we are aware of:

• Some archive project photography carries brief descriptive alternative text rather than full scene description.
• Content linked from third-party platforms — social profiles and mapping services — is outside our control and may not meet the same standard.
• Older archive material predates our current standards and is being reviewed as assets are replaced.

We treat accessibility reports as defects rather than requests, and we will confirm receipt and tell you what we intend to do about it.

You never have to use the online form to work with Empire. Every inquiry can be handled by phone or email, and if a different format or channel works better for you, ask and we will accommodate it where we reasonably can.
